Vehicle Impounded Because of Political Sign?

5/10 -- 12:30pm -- ATLANTA (AP) --

About 16 minutes after Deborah and Ronald Moon parked their pickup truck in downtown Jackson, their vehicle was impounded by city police. The reason? The Georgia couple claims it was because the truck featured a GOP political sign.

The Moons filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday claiming Jackson officials violated their free speech rights in the midst of election season when they towed the vehicle in October 2010 because it had a sign in the truck bed supporting Rep. Austin Scott, a Tifton Republican.

The two said Jackson Mayor Charlie Brown called police minutes after they parked the vehicle and demanded it be towed "because it
had political signs," according to the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Macon. It claims other vehicles in the area that were without political signs went untouched.

"We were shocked. The fact that a local elected official would so blatantly abuse the power of his office to impact an election is alarming and should concern everyone," Ronald Moon said in a
statement.

Brown did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The lawsuit, filed by Gerry Weber, contends Brown and Jackson officials "censored the Moons' campaign sign explicitly because of its political content and its viewpoint supporting a Republican candidate."

It asked a judge to reprimand the city for violating First Amendment rights, and also seeks punitive and compensatory damages as well as attorney fees.

"The censorship of the Moons' political message, in the midst of a campaign for Congress, restricted his right to free speech designed to express a position on a time-sensitive issue," it said.

I parked my 1958 Edsel with a Nixon-Lodge campaign sticker on the bumper and the city police towed it off. They said it was a two time looser.

Constitution, I agree with most of your sentiments, particlarly about our freedoms being eroded as much by our government as anything else (can you spell Patriot Act?). However, if there is a pre-determined REASON why someone should not be allowed on my airplane or train because they may be a terrorist risk, that's fine with me. There are problems with the no fly list and there would be with a no ride system as well because innocent people get caught up in it, if only temporarily. I'm more concerned about illegal, unconstitutional government eavesdropping, and that carried out by Verizon and AT&T in collaboration with the government - and then they get special dispensation from criminal prosecution by Congress [YOU try to get that] after they've all committed crimes, including unauthorized wiretaps and conspiracy to do so.

There isn't enough information in this article to really form an opinion. I'd need to see or have described where they parked, I'd need to hear from some city officials their side of the story. Sure, it sounds bad now, but it also sounds a bit exaggerated. How do they know it was the mayor that called and what he told the police? Did the police tell them? Were they standing there? If so - what were they doing with the Mayor, is it possible there is more to this story than them simply parking their truck and it being impounded?

You would impound "they are" vehicle? I bet Governor Scott knows the proper context in which to use their, there, and they're.

People need to wake up our rights are underhandedly being infringed on purpose. Just recently Chuck Schumer announced a NO RIDE LISTfor trains. Such as the No FLY LIST. Where does it end. Problem with this is that Americans are finding themselves on this list. This list accuses you of criminal wrong doing before anything is even done, therefore your rights are underhandedly being abused. WAKE UP AMERICA. We need a DO NOT VOTE LIST of all the sneaky underhanded bills that are being passed in the name of safety. I fear my goverment and losing my freedoms more than a someone who has dark skin and wears a turbine.
