Lowndes County, GA -- February 16, 2012 --

On Wednesday, February 15, Sergeant Jack Winningham, an investigator with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, was driving on Georgia Highway 376 near Lake Park when he observed a vehicle in front of him running off the roadway multiple times.

Due to a safety concern Sergeant Winningham stopped the vehicle and spoke with the occupants. While speaking with Darra Maulden, Sergeant Winningham noticed two {2} forty seven inch {47”} flat screen televisions, still in boxes, in the vehicle, a Mercury Grand Marquis. One television was in the back seat and the other was in the trunk of the car, which was open.

During their conversation, the vehicle passenger, Darra Maulden stated that she had purchased the televisions from the Wal-Mart on Norman Drive in Valdosta. The store management was contacted in an attempt to verify the purchase. It was learned that the televisions had not been purchased from that store as stated by Darra Maulden.

During an investigation it was confirmed that Darra Maulden had actually entered the business, loaded the televisions in a cart and walked out without paying.

The driver was released after it was confirmed that they had no involvement in the theft. Darra Maulden was arrested and transported to the Lowndes County Jail. She will appear in the Lowndes County Magistrate Court today for the consideration of a bond.

Charged: Maulden, Darra Ann
19 years old
U.S. Highway 129
Jasper, Florida
Charges: Theft by shoplifting – felony

Sheriff Prine commended Sergeant Winningham for his keen observation that led to this arrest. “Our deputies never know what a traffic stop will lead to” and this is a good example of a deputy going beyond his normal duties said Sheriff Prine.

Sheriff Prine encouraged anyone with information pertaining to any crime to contact the Sheriff’s Office at {229} 671-2900 or the departments tip line at {229} 671-2985. Tips can also be submitted on-line at www.lowndessheriff.com. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

Really?I wonder why Sargent Winningham allowed the driver to go free when the driver is a repeat affender for driving with no license. Even was allowed to leave and drive home with "NO" Driver License!!None of this makes any sense to me!!! Cop really doing a good job!!

Wait, wait...the cop has to call and verify a purchase if he just notices a product in a car? WTH is that about?

He probably asked her for a receipt, and naturally she couldn't produce one. Sounds like the cop's instincts were spot on.

Maybe she learned this from her sister in law. Her and another girl are very well known to do this from all the local Wal-marts. Live oak, Lake City and Valdosta. They would steal something and go trade it back for money. Sounds like a drug problem to me. Knowing the trash she has been hanging out with in Live Oak that taught her all these things. Matter of fact one of them is an EX Convict!

No one said she isn't responsible for her actions I don't think. But being around that kind of trash CAN have a horrible influence on young people tho, no matter how they are raised.

Darra, It will be ok! Dont listen to nun of these ppl on here, they have nothing to do, then to sit behind a computer and talk trash.I tink I know u better then most, we have spent alot of time together and I care about u alot! Just know that I will always be here for u and I will always have faith in u no matter what, u will always be my bestfriend, and I will always love u unconditionally! In times like this u just got to hold ur head high, pray to God and never give up. I understand that u made a mistake, we all do, no one is perfect. I just hope that u learn from this and u dont ever let it happen again. No one is perfect and I guess these ppl on here dont understand that ppl do fall short. Everyone on here thats trash talkin seems pretty ignorant to me because, first of all I dont think its ur place to judge somebody and call them " dumb " for makeing poor decisions, we all do! No she is not dumb, she just made a pretty dumb decision! Darra I know u are a great person, I know u have a big heart, I know u will do anything to help anyone and I also know u are a great mother and u care about ur son alot! U will make it thru this, u are a strong girl, just keep ur head, high pray to God and try to get ur prioritys together! Worry about u and ur son, try a new change of friends (u are who u associate with) and maybe a new environment! Just looking out for u, I love u stay strong! You say that a teenager with an illegitimate child who stole two televisions from Wal-Mart is not dumb. What about people with bad grammar?

Maybe you and Darra should get some continued education. You to learn grammar, spelling and punctuation and her to obviously learn right from wrong. Furthermore, (Darra) love your child enough not to make stupid decisions that cause you to be a bad example and an absent parent!!!

What she does behind closed doors is her business, when she takes her business out into the public and steals, then it is our business.
