Author Donna Meredith took her audience on a trip through the ages as she explored how women have changed over time in famous titles.

Meredith says as the times have changed and women's rights have evolved, their character traits in books have also shifted.

She continues, "Things have really changed. We're allowed to be imperfect and we're allowed to be intelligent. We get to vote. We get to own property and we're allowed to work in any job we want to today."

The first Women's History Month started out as a week-long celebration in 1981, and in 1987 it expanded to a month-long event.

Women's rights activists say they've been fighting for equality with men for over a century.
