On Monday, university president Patrick Schloss addressed the Blazer community in the annual convocation.

He highlighted last year's achievements such as the largest enrollment increase in 16 years, and high expectations for the year to come.

Schloss spoke of the Strategic Focus planning and budget process which is in it's second year.

He said it's provided more than 3 million dollars and by using Strategic Focus 2010 funds, faculty and staff have developed new online degree and certificate programs, enhanced student services, grown
our marching and pep bands, and added competitive athletic opportunities for women.

"I think the university has two major holidays, convocation and commencement," said university professor Patrick Biddix. "Both of these should be celebrated and I think this is a good way to really kick things off."

President Schloss couldn't shy away from talking about pending budget cuts but said the university is doing its best to provide for students and retain as much faculty as possible.

VSU has been told to brace for additional double digit cut in state appropriations.

Last year's budget has already been slashed by five percent.
