ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Police have identified a couple who died in
an apparent murder-suicide and whose bodies were discovered by
their 9-year-old son.

Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman says 35-year-old Harry Marable shot his wife, Phyllis, and then himself in the couple's bedroom Friday.

Police say their son, who turned 10 the next day, thought his parents were sleeping in and didn't check on them until about 6 p.m.

Police believe the child did not see the shootings because he was playing outside much of the day.

Friday was a school holiday.

The boy is staying with his grandmother.

Holeman says police have responded to domestic calls involving
the couple in the past.

He did not elaborate.

What a terrible legacy for this boy. Every year on his birthday he will remember what his father did to his mother and himself. Perhaps the boy's perception will become hopeful if he is taught that mental illness was the problem. Perhaps the boy will grow up to study psychology. One can only hope (and pray) that this child's emotional scar will heal.
