An air race in Reno, Nevada left at least nine dead and many injured.
Then just a day later, another antique plane crashed at an air show in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
The scene unfolded in the blink of an eye Saturday when John Mangan of Concord, North Carolina had just completed an acrobatic maneuver in which his and another plane crossed in a very near pass.
Mere seconds after the maneuver, Mangan's plane suddenly dove into the ground.
He did not survive the crash.
According to his profile at the team's website, Jack "Flash" Mangan was an alternate wing team member and a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy.
He spent 13 years in active duty, earning several awards, including three Meritorious Service Medals and the Tactical Air Command's Instructor Pilot of the Year award.
