Tallahassee, Florida - July 14, 2011 -
It was so quiet as we entered the child's room, you could have heard a baby pin drop.
Little did we know that a ticking time bomb named MacKenzie Marie Ashburn was in the crib, set to go off when nanny Carol Gordon said..
" ..I don't know if you've ever changed a diaper before.."
"Check to see if there are any solids...no. Take this out.. Yeah, underneath."
"Whew.. that was traumatic! Yeah, really. For her too!"
I felt like I'd been through a war.. and lost. But Mackenzie's nanny is a veteran of many a baby battle.
As we strapped in for a stroll, Carol Gordon tried to list all the kids she's cared for over the last two decades.
"The first one was Allison, then Benton, Nick.. there's a little baby.. I can't remember her name.."
Thirteen.. including Brian and his twin sister, Emily Grace, Austin, Maya, Lily Grace, and of course, Mackenzie!
Speaking of Mackenzie, she was finally warming up to me a little. She enjoyed dipping her feet in the fountain by the FSU baseball stadium.
"She loves to be out and about with people. E-I-E-I-O! "
We did all the work pushing the stroller, but somehow Mackenzie worked up an appetite.
" Delicious!" "Uh Oh!.. You dropped it!"
She loves to munch.. but doesn't mind sharing!
"One for me..one for you."
Now we've got to work off that breakfast.. with some dancing!.
"Come on my little pookie will you dance with me? Hey Hey. let's dance!"
Soccer's fun! So is a good chase.
"I'm gonna get you.. .I got you!"
Carol loves Mackenzie and never wants to take the place of her true parents. But the very first baby she nannied didn't seem to understand that:
"Her momma was gone a lot and she called me momma first.. and I felt kind of bad."
I felt kind of bad too.. when it was chore time and the first task was dealing with dirty diapers. They're put in something called the Diaper Genie..
"The Diaper Genie is not the most pleasant smelling thing in the world!"
They're taken at a dead run to the garbage!
"It's time for laundry.. No Bye Bye! It's time to help with the laundry!"
You could tell I hadn't done much of this either.
"Permanent press..which is over to the far right?"
Babies are messy! They take a lot-- but Carol says they give a lot in return.
She's had three jobs with the state, but ..
"I always go back to nannying because it's so fulfilling and rewarding. They don't care how you look.. they just need the love. They want held, loved and cared for."
