A Gallup poll shows that one in four people respect smokers less than they do non-smokers.
"First off, smoking is just a nasty, despicable habit," said Reed Mathis, D.C., a Tallahassee Chiropractor and instructor at TCC.
That's apparently the opinion of many. A recent Gallup poll shows that one in four people say they respect smokers less than non-smokers.
"I think people who don't smoke consider it a choice and it's thought maybe to be a bad choice," added Mathis.
19 % of the U.S population still smokes despite health warnings from doctors, the government and peers. The poll also shows that 5% of people who recently quit, agree with the findings and also respect smokers less than non-smokers.
"There's so much negativity and so much propaganda based against smoking, it's only natural that if the government puts enough hate toward a particular subject, of course the populous is going to look negatively upon it," said Matt Strickland, a smoker.
Sure some people think it's a nasty habit but what does respect have to do with it?
"As long as it's not affecting the people around me and I keep it to myself and I step away. It shouldn't really have any bearing on the respect people have for me," added Strickland.
Strickland brings up a valid point. It seems smoking only affects respect when it really affects someone else.
" I know in the workplace for example, if you're a smoker, you have to take breaks to have a cigarette. so it has to decrease productivity," said Mathis.
" Smoke stinks and nobody wants to stink. So I think it's important to keep your appearance and such that you're a professional."
So keep it clean, keep it to yourself and hopefully get the respect you deserve.
