Girls Can Do Anything Summer Camp

May 16, 2012 -

The Girls Can Do Anything Summer Camp is designed to encourage girls between the ages of 5 to 15 years old on leadership skills, healthy relationships, friendships and promote self esteem.

Founded in 2007, The Oasis Center for Women and Girls is a non-profit community based women's center based in Tallahassee. According to Executive Director, Haley Cutler, "our vision and our mission is improving the lives of women and girls through celebration and support." She says, "girls very rarely get an opportunity to be in a space with all girls that is focused on how great, wonderful, and amazing it is to be a girl without the need to be judged, the need to be told how you should be."

With that idea in mind, 5 years ago, the Girls Can Do Anything Summer Camp was born, designed to encourage girls between the ages of 5 to 15 years old on leadership skills, healthy relationships, friendships and promote self esteem.

At the Oasis Center, they believe there is a significant benefit to providing a safe place for women and children to connect and share experiences. Cutler states, “at our summer camp, it's okay for girls to play with bugs, it's okay for girls to be really free, to be boisterous, and they get encouraged for exploring who they are."

One of the primary goals of the camp is to show girls the endless possibilities for their lives by introducing them to women in the community doing diverse things. According to Social and Clinical Services Director, Sarah Sturges, “we try to keep our girls really busy over the summer and do lots of fun things with them but we definitely put an emphasis on wanting to make sure our girls get exposure to athletics so we partner with the FSU athletics and have the girls involved with the women's volleyball teams, softball, basketball, soccer and more."

Cutler also says the camp also focuses on building bridges across lines of diversity such as race, socio-economic, family style and disability to help girls develop friendships across those lines at a young age and says “the reason why we consider that so impactful and why we think that should start happening at a really young age is that we want to support families in our communities in raising girls who have an expansive vision of who they can be and what they can do."
