A Jasper City Council member fighting to keep his seat says he's feeling the heat because he voted to oust the former City Manager.

Councilman Darnell Lumpkin has been working to prove his physical address is within the district he serves.

Lumpkin told Eyewitness News he became a target once he voted to terminate former City Manager Larry Cail.

Wednesday, WCTV obtained a copy from the city showing Cail emailed the city attorney about Lumpkins Address saying, "It has been brought to my attention that Mr. Lumpkin changed his voter registration from the district he represents in the city to a district within the county on October 31, 2008."

Cail goes on to say that according to the City Charter that Lumpkin must vacant the position.

"Mr. Lumpkin, where do you live? In my trailer park, 898 Southwest sixth street Lot two."

In a packed room, Jasper City Councilman Darnell Lumpkin braved the fire to tell his counterparts why he still qualified to hold his seat.

"I lived on sixth street for ten years," said Lumpkin.

Earlier this week, a meeting was called to address Lumpkin's mailing address and whether or not he met the requirements to be a councilman.

One by one residents stepped forward to speak for and against Lumpkin.

"According to the voter registration, the address they give him is 898 sixth street Southwest and I believe unit number two but the question is does he truly live there?

"Why do they keep bugging this man about where he lives at? I don't understand that. I thought everyone was suppose to get along up here and do the right thing."

Although Lumpkin has utility bills showing he does live within city limits, he says this special meeting isn't just about his address.

"To be honest and frank about it, this is not an issue dealing with the city, this is kind of a personal issue that they are dealing with because we fired the ex-City Manager Larry Cail," said Lumpkin.

Lumpkin has 20 days to get legal advice and all his paperwork together before he faces the council again. But he says finding justice is tough in Jasper.

"It's not fair here, it's not justice and won't never be justice here."

But it's something he looks to find in his next Public Hearing.

Much respect to those who care about Lumpkin because you think he is a good person..but, get real..can the people of Jasper be so out of touch to think that just because someone is nice that they don't have to live in the district they represent. That is common sense. Rule #1 for any elected office..you must reside in the district in which you represent. Rules apply to everyone...

looks like the hating is still alive in Jasper, why would they want to vote a councilman out if he is looking out to best interest of the city. keep your head up pops and don't lay down stand your ground and fight for what you have earned, a position on the council.

Attention 5:07 AM Anonymous it shouldn't matter where someone lives or what it looks like. It's what's Mr. Lumpkin has in his heart and I know his is full of love and yours in full of landfill. Leave Mr. Lumpkin alone and clean up your attitude.

What in the world is going on over there. Sounds a group haters has started conflict since the firing of Cail. Cail needs to go back to selling auto parts he wasn't qualified for the position. Now the council needs to work together for the best of Jasper and move ahead. Everyone else neds to support their elected officials and stop pointing fingers.

During the meeting I believe I undertood them to say it was a citzen that brought the complaint to the attorney, not a city councilmen.

There are those on the council who think that they and they alone are running the city. When things do not go their way they will use any way they can find to change things, legal, ethical or moral or not. When one of them gets the city sued maybe people will wake up and demand they resign or be recalled.

This matter should have been addressed at the time he chose to run for the seat. The council should address issues that concern all the people of Jasper and not just this piece of trivial thing. I can not believe with the expensiveness of utilities in the cities anybody would be willing to pay for something they do not use. It appears to be retaliation against him because of the fact that the issue is being addressed after he voted out the city manager. I hope it is not because this could cost the city of Jasper some money in a civil lawsuit.
