Fla. Siblings Planned Life in Mexico After Crime Spree

WALSENBURG, Colo. 9-21-11

A Colorado detective says a sister and two brothers accused in a cross-country crime spree planned to flee to Mexico and obtain fraudulent documents.

Colorado Springs police Det. Larry Dyer testified Tuesday that one of the siblings, 21-year-old Ryan Edward Dougherty, said he hatched the plan after he was convicted in Florida of sending sexually explicit text messages to an 11-year-old girl.

Dyer says Dougherty came up with the idea the day he was sentenced to register as a sex offender.

The new details in the case emerged during a hearing in southern Colorado where the trio was captured last month after a widely publicized manhunt.

The siblings are accused of robbing a bank in Georgia and shooting at police officers in Florida and Colorado.
