Apalachicola Braces for Ivan

As Ivan approached, DOT contractors worked feverishly to keep U.S. Highway 98 near Apalachicola open. Erosion was already starting to nip at the roadway. The hope was that 30 truckloads of dirt and rock would prevent a washout.

On nearby St. George island, waves pounded the shoreline as a sail boat concessionaire had second thoughts about leaving his boats to nature’s fury. The island was for the most part boarded up and deserted.

Kaye Shaw and daughter Caroline fled Alabama for the relative safety of Apalachicola. The two checked in to the Gibson Inn as protective plywood was going up for the first time in 21 years.

The storm surge was almost certain to cause isolated flooding in isolated areas miles inland from the coast, and with each passing hour, residents here were hopeful Ivan would spare them his worst.
