A Tallahasee mother with a baby in her arms is escorted off a plane by police and now she is demanding answers from Delta.

Jen Starks was on a flight from Tallahassee to Memphis last Friday (September 17th) when a flight attendant told her to remove her 8-month-old son Tyler from his carrier and hold him over her shoulder for the entirety of the flight.

Starks says she thought that was necessary only for take off and landing so, she questioned the instructions and refused the flight attendant's commands.

Upon landing Starks found herself being escorted off the plane by Memphis Police and threatened with an FAA fine.

"I don't think it's okay for anyone to be bullied," Starks said, "but it's more than bullied, it's having the attendants know what the regulations are, informing the parents what the regulations are and making it more safe for babies and a more pleasant experience for families who are traveling."

"What's safe for our babies and why? What is the proper way to hold your child? What's a safe carrier? The infant in arms is not addressed at all when you're on board, so I think they need to re-examine why we have certain regulations, maybe update and review them and then educate parents, so you're not wondering and you're not put through this."

Delta Spokeswoman Susan Elliott says "in certain situations our flight attendants may ask passengers to hold their infant or small child in anticipation of turbulence."

Starks says that was not the case on her flight.

Elliott says "We are working with the regional carrier that operated this flight to investigate what occurred onboard. Int the meantine, we have reached out to the passenger to learn more about this experience and offer an apology."

The only safe way to travel with a baby is a car seat or cares restraint system (over 1). In arms, your child will be ripped from your arms and fly across the cabin, in wrap/ergo you've turned your child into an airbag. Your child's life should be worth more to you than the few hundred dollars you save flying infant in arms. It's tough. I had to lug car seat and cooler (for pumped breastmilk)for my child at 6 mths but really is the only safe way to travel with a baby.

Most of these comments are filled with ignorance and hate. How could a mom nurse a child in a car seat on an air plane?? Well, without looking completely ridiculous, and I am sure that would have caused an even bigger scene. For those bashing slings and baby carriers, perhaps you should look into the benefits PROVEN to mom and baby, and what they actually are. Those stating Jen made a bad choice don't even know what a baby carrier is.... Read Jen's blog for more details and her stance on the situation, before you judge and say how irresponsible and "lucky" she was...

Wow, have to admit I'm astonished by the support of the FAA and Delta in some of these comments. How many more freedoms do we have to lose before the rest of you realize how slowly we are becoming socialistic? I have a hard time believing turbulence is going to kill my baby - regardless of how it's being held or restrained. Besides that, how would you feel to be the passenger behind THIS mom who's toting three under the age of five who technically ALL need child restraint seats!!!? The carrier is both a convenience for mom/baby, safe as you can get on a plane and the ultimate peace-maker in the face of a fussy passenger. Those of you who see otherwise are NOT family friendly and obviously don't have any sense of preservation of rights. I challenge you to think about the big picture here - without clear guidance or rules someone (stewardess) decided that something a mom was doing (that's entirely natural) was worthy of armed escort. Wow, I feel SO much safer now - NOT!
