Check Fraud Scheme in South Georgia

In the past two and a half months, the Thomasville Criminal Investigation Department has worked 40 cases of check fraud.

Troy Rich says, "It's the most common crime occurring in the city of Thomasville and I believe in the nation."

Two suspects are behind one of the most recent cases. The male, identified as Lawrence Carroll of Moultrie, is seen in surveillance video leaving Lowe's with two riding lawn mowers after paying for them using a fake ID to pass off a counterfeit check.

Tim Watkins says, "A person's Discover Card checks were stolen, later that same person that stole those checks was able to counterfeit checks using the person's name and a business in Colquitt County bank routing number and account number."

Since September, the duo has gotten away with more than $30,000 worth of merchandise at Lowe's and Wal-Mart stores in Thomasville, Tifton and Moultrie, a serious crime investigators say could have been prevented.

Watkins says, "Study the document the person is presenting as ID. Don't let them write the driver's license number on the check, actually hold the driver's license, look at it and make sure you're comfortable with it."

Troy Rich adds, "It's frustrating. These people are hard to find, to catch."

Authorities say check forgery has become easy for criminals, making it the crime of choice. Hopefully the video will help authorities cash in on a lead and an arrest.
