Florida is about to come under the microscope again on November 2, so will Leon County lead the way again with an error free election? The Leon County supervisor of elections and his staff are working hard to make sure the answer to that question is yes.
The supervisor of elections is happy to report that all systems are a go and that's a good thing with so many eyes watching Florida.
With less than two weeks to go, things are ticking along for the Leon County supervisor of elections office, but in Florida is there any pressure?
Janet Olin, assistant supervisor, says, "Oh, none whatsoever, and if I keep telling myself that, I'll get through it. No, obviously, yes we're in crunch time and we have a record number of registered voters in Leon County at close to 200,000, that's phenomenal."
Judge Augustus Aiken, Leon County canvassing board chair, says, "We have a very capable staff and the canvassing board has been around for a couple of elections. I think the procedure will be the same."
During the last two weeks, elections workers will be put to the grindstone, making sure there are no surprises November 2.
Olin says, "This is pre-election testing. This is where we take the equipment and by the audience members that are here, from what they randomly select, we test that precinct for accuracy and to make sure the machines haven't been tampered with."
The Accu Vote machines have the green light and that brings a sigh of relief for the assistant supervisor, with the spotlight shining bright on Florida for Election 2004.
Olin adds, "Not just for our good looks and beauty, nut because of election 2000 and who we still remain a pivotal state and eyes are on us. Here in Leon County, because we have the capital, we have seen the national and international press here already."
Olin says if Thursday’s testing showed any problems, the next step would be to troubleshoot and go from there. There are 150 Accu Vote machines in Leon County. About 120 of them will be at precincts for Election Day. If one fails, immediately a new accurate and working machine is brought in.
