It's now a common site in the city of Midway: buildings being constructed, meaning more jobs for local residents.
City officials say after years of being in the red financially, they now have a surplus in their account and attribute the turnaround to dedicated council and community members.
Mayor Delores Madison says, "A lot of hard work, a lot of being in the right place at the right time, the commitment from City Council, the commitment from the citizens that live out here who are just willing and able to do whatever it takes to help us build the city up."
That sense of commitment has attracted several new business to the area, including a new hotel being constructed near the I-10 interchange.
Other changes are in store as well. The city of Midway has been awarded a community development grant for more than $400,000 for infrastructure to build a new shopping center on U.S. 90 and Dupont Road.
In addition to a new shopping center, city officials were awarded a $650,000 community block grant to pave roads, including U.S. 90.
City officials say these changes have caused interested companies to take a second look at Gadsden County's best kept secret.
