There’s more on the bizarre case of the decomposed body found in Grady County earlier this month. Investigators are now trying to locate friends or family of the man to help figure out what happened to him.

A human skull and bone fragments were all investigators had to identify the body was found in a wooded area in Grady County.

Bahan Rich, a special agent with the GBI, says, "We were able to recover some info at the scene that led us to a name."

From dental records investigators were able to positively identify the body as that of 52-year-old James David Fanning, who had a previous criminal record in Texas.

Rich adds, "At this point we don't really know much about Mr. Fanning. He was originally born in California, but we have not been able to contact any family members to notify them of his death."

Investigators still don't know how the man died or how his body got in Grady County, but they say he was a transient and may have had local ties.

Rich says, "We do know based upon info about Mr. Fanning that he had lived in Valdosta, Ocala and other places in south Georgia and north Florida."

Investigators are hoping friends or family of the man will contact authorities, adding some closure to this mystery so Fanning's remains can properly be laid to rest.

Investigators say at this point there is no indication of foul play involved, but they say that may change depending on information they get from the community.

If you have any information or recognize James Fanning, please call authorities at 229-225-4090.
