Thursday Tallahassee Memorial Hospital announced its affiliation with the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. Patients diagnosed with cancer have a new place to turn for treatment that is closer to home and one of the largest cancer centers in the country.
Cloudy skies couldn't cover up the celebration occurring inside a pop-up tent at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Jennifer Sims, a member of the TMH Patient and Family Advisory Council, says, "This is a dream come true because now everyone will be afforded the same opportunity I was."
Four years ago, Jennifer Sims was diagnosed with cancer just after learning she was expecting her second child.
Jennifer conquered cancer with treatment from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa. Now, TMH and Moffitt are signing an agreement, a pact to provide the utmost in cancer care to all patients in the Big Bend.
Philip Sharp of the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Committee, says, "This will open door to broader range of clinical trails as individual physicians become members of Moffit medical staff."
It will open the lines of communication for more comprehensive cancer care, the same treatment Jennifer Sims saw.
Jennifer says, "On behalf of my son, who is now three years old, beautiful and perfect we made it through chemo."
With this affiliation, physicians hope to afford the same success to others battling the disease. The Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute is one of the largest in the United States.
Before Thursday's agreement, patients had to travel to Tampa to access Moffitt's resources, but now patients in north Florida and even south Georgia have access to Moffit's specialized treatments and advanced research without leaving Tallahassee.
