Local Dog Rescuer

If you're a fan of The Price Is Right, you know the last thing Bob Barker says: "Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered." A local lady has taken that message and much more to the streets.

The adorable dogs are lucky to be alive. At one time they were either sick and about to be euthanized at a shelter, or abandoned.

Laurie Deese, who rescues dogs, says, “They come to us with skin diseases, skin and bones, no hair, and we don't want 'em suffering so we take them in.”

For five years, Laurie Deese has been saving dogs and puppies through her organization Best Friends Dog Rescue. After nursing them back to health, the cute canines are ready for adoption.

“People e-mail me from all over. I've had people e-mail me and want me to fly puppies up north.”

Kathy Brown, a volunteer, says, “I have friends that have dogs not fixed. I tell them my friend runs Best Friends Dog Rescue and we can get your dog fixed.”

In fact, every two weeks they load up and head to a clinic in Tallahassee.

“We take 15 to 20 dogs and get them spayed or neutered for other people, or my own rescue dogs.”

Surviving on fundraising dollars and a lot of heart and soul, Laurie says it's worth it.
