Georgia Hate Crimes

There's just three days left in this year's term. The Georgia Legislature has made no move to rewrite a hate crimes law, even though Supreme Court justices specifically told them they were welcome to revisit the issue.

The law's original sponsor, Democratic Sen. Vincent Fort of Atlanta, reacted to the ruling last year by saying a new hate crimes law would be a top priority in the 2005 legislative session, but he didn't even propose a new law until after the legislative deadline for a bill to pass at least one chamber.

The inaction means Georgia will remain one of five states without a hate crimes law, at least for another year.
