Parents Credit 9-1-1 Operators With Saving Baby's Life

In a panic, Sheryl Driggers picked up the phone and called 9-1-1, and she says the operator on the other end literally saved her baby's life.

Sheryl says, "He just went limp. I couldn't get any kind of response. He stopped breathing, just nothing. It was the most helpless feeling I've ever felt in my whole life."

Sheryl Driggers, a new mother with a two-week-old baby, called 9-1-1 in a panic. Tiny Barrett wasn't breathing.

On the other end of the phone was LCSO 9-1-1 operator Cindy Walker.

"Completely cover your baby's mouth and nose with your mouth, then blow two soft puffs of air into his lungs, just like you're blowing up a balloon," she instructed.

Walker calmly talked the panicked mother through infant CPR.

"Place two fingers in the center of his chest, right between the nipples. Ok? Push down one inch with only your fingertips touching the chest and pump his chest rapidly five times."

Cindy Walker says, "It was really hard because I have children of my own and I can understand what she was going through. It was really scary for me too."

Paramedic Tom McNabb soon added to the help. The group effort went on for 13 minutes before Barrett started to wail.

Cindy Walker says, "It was like music to my ears. I knew that baby would be fine. If he was breathing, he'd be fine, hopefully, which he was."

Jason Driggers, the father, says, "I just want to tell them thank you. They had the knowledge and the level headedness to keep, try to keep her calm, and basically saved his life. We don't know what would have happened if they weren't there."

Doctors can only surmise that Barrett coughed something up in his sleep and was choking on it. This happened in January, and Barrett's been monitored for sleep apnea for the past two months with no signs of trouble. He's doing just fine.
