Couple Dies in Fiery Interstate Crash

Two people have lost their lives in a crash. Witnesses say after the impact, the van burst into flames. They did what they could to help, but say it was impossible.

Richard Wade, a witness, says, "I saw the van come this way in the ditch, flipped over in front of the semi. [The] semi didn't have a chance to miss him."

It caused hours of backed up traffic on I-10, sending the overflow onto Tallahassee Roads Friday morning. Witnesses who saw what happened say it was unreal.

Dean Merlau, a witness, says, "I was traveling eastbound on the interstate and about to get off on the Thomasville Road exit, and that's when I looked in my mirror, saw the van in the outside lane cross and make contact with the other.”

The van was clipped.

CAPT Al Wofford with the Florida Highway Patrol says, "[It] entered into the median, flipped on its side, came across to the westbound lanes and was struck by a tractor trailer traveling westbound."

Witnesses say after the tractor trailer hit the van, both vehicles went off the interstate, into the tree line, and burst into flames.

Dean Merlau says, "People tried to fight the fire, but that was like fighting a forest fire with a squirt gun."

FHP says that I-10 westbound was shut down for about five hours Friday, sending that traffic on U.S. 90 and 27.

The interstate is now opened. Charges are pending against the driver of the vehicle that clipped the van.
