Students Become a Part of History

A school trip to Washington D.C. goes from historic sightseeing to becoming a part of U.S. history.

The students, principal and chaperones get more excitement than they could have ever dreamed. At the beginning of this school year a meeting was held to discuss a trip to Washington D.C. because the last time the school visited was prior to September 11th.

When Shiver Principal Margie Jordan began planning a trip to Washington D.C. for the 7th and 8th graders, she never imagined it would turn out to be the trip of a lifetime.

On Wednesday May 11 the group of 53 students and adults was having lunch at the U.S. Capitol. Shiver school Principal Margie Jordan recalls that terrifying moment.

"The officers in that room started yelling, ‘evacuate now, evacuate now, this is not a practice, evacuate now.’ "

A small plane had entered restricted airspace and thousands were evacuated from the D.C. area including the Shiver school group.

"9/11 was really going through my head cause I was really scared all the airplanes and stuff it was scary," said student Shelby Mitchell.

"I was thinking about all the stuff they had been saying about nuclear bombs and weapons of mass destruction and I was just thinking that they were gonna unload 'em right then and there, and I looked at my mom and told her if we live through this just let us go back to Cairo cause that's where I was wanting to be," said student Jacob Jones.

Principal Jordan says they all decided to continue with their normal schedule and finished off their trip. She adds that the experience was a lesson on how prepared the nation's Capitol complex is to handle an evacuation.

It provided an out-of-the- classroom lesson these students will never forget.

Principal Jordan said in spite of it all, she plans to continue making the D.C. trip every other year with her 7th and 8th graders.

As far as returning to the nation’s capital city, some students say they are skeptical about making a trip in the near future.
