A Report on WCTV Helps Track Down a Missing Sex Offender

Now to the ongoing search for convicted sex offenders who are AWOL from the system that registers them. A report on Eyewitness News helped track down one of the missing.

Officials say a violation of parole landed Maurice Montgomery in the Grady County Jail. According to the Leon County Sheriff's Office, Montgomery is wanted in Leon County for failing to register as a sex offender, which is a felony.

Officials say Maurice Montgomery had been in the Grady County Jail for more than a week.

Janice Lashley, a secretary, says, "I was getting ready to come to work and I was watching The Good Morning Show on Channel 6, and they were talking about sex offenders, that they couldn't find them. They showed a picture of Maurice Montgomery and gave his name."

After verifying his identity, officials with the Grady County Sheriff's Office contacted the Leon County Sheriff's Office, a collaborative effort not unfamiliar for these two agencies.

Grady County sheriff’s OFC Harry Young says, "We've got a good rapport with them. They help us out in anything we contact them with, and we do them also."

"If all the agencies don't come together, then how are we ever going to accomplish one thing? You've got to come together as a team to be able to catch all the criminals," said Lashley.

Lashley adds that she notified parole and they issued a bench warrant for Montgomery. Officials in Grady County say that once Montgomery finishes his jail term in Grady County they will do a waiver extradition and Leon County officials will take Montgomery back to Florida.

Sheriff Young says at the moment there are 35 registered sex offenders in the Grady County area and they are in the process of identifying each one and making sure they are living at the address which is registered with the Sheriff's Office.
