Quran Abuse

The Pentagon has released details of five confirmed incidents of abuse of the Quran at Guantanamo Bay.

The military confirms that a soldier deliberately kicked the Muslim holy book and that an interrogator stepped on a Quran.

The Pentagon has released new details about mishandling of the Quran at Guantanamo Bay.

A written statement details five confirmed cases, four more unconfirmed where Quantanamo interrogators or guards stepped on the holy Muslim book, kicked it, or splashed it with water. In one case a guard's urine came through an air vent and splashed on a detainee's Quran.

In addition, there were also 15 cases of detainees mishandling their own Qurans. The findings are a result of an investigation triggered by a Newsweek magazine article.

The piece, eventually retracted, claimed numerous mishandling including a U.S. soldier flushing a Quantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down the toilet.

The White House blamed the story for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan and Brigadier General Jay Hood began a fact finding mission.

Just last week hood announced the Quran flushing incident never happened.

"We have found no credible evidence that a member of the joint task force at Guantanamo Bay ever flushed a Quran down the toilet," said Hood.

The Pentagon released a statement calling the military's policy regarding the Quran "serious, respectful and appropriate."

But with at least five cases of mishandling now confirmed, the Pentagon is also planning new guidelines for handling people captured during wartime, including an explicit ban on inhumane treatment.
