Will the city of Tallahassee buy into a coal-fired power plant?
Right now, the city is primarily running on natural gas, leaving no options when gas prices peak, but that could change.
The city has been invited to join three other agencies to build a new coal fired power plant in north Florida. The partnership is called the North Florida Power Project.
Keving Wailes, COT Electric Utility General Manager, says, "Tallahassee's portion if we choose to participate would be about 20 percent. The project from what the partners are saying to us, is whether or not Tallahassee participates, this project will go forward."
The preferred location for the coal plant is Taylor County, but other locations are being investigated. The city board decided on Thursday that they want to hear from you and scheduled a public hearing for July 6.
