July 4th Pet Safety

Staying safe for Independence Day is important. Animal Control officers want to make sure you do the same for your pets.

The biggest piece of advice to keep pets safe during Fourth of July celebrations never take your pets to fireworks displays.

They also suggest: never leave them in a car, leave a TV or radio playing if you leave them home alone, and never leave your pets chained outside.

A frightened animal might get entangled or break the chain and flee.

Jan Collier works at the Tallahassee-Leon Animal Service Center and said, "Cats are especially frightened by loud noises anyway and strange things, so this is a particularly upsetting time for cats. We find that a lot of animals panic and run away from home."

Collier says if your pet is lost, post lost flyers and immediately contact your local animal shelter.
