Rita's Approach Means High Gas Prices Again

Oil prices have surged with the possibility that production could be interrupted again.

Since Texas is home to 27 percent of U.S. refinery capacity, drivers in our area worry Rita will once again send fuel prices soaring at local pumps, so many are topping off tanks now.

Chip Sellers, a driver, says, "Due to what happened with past hurricanes I feel like gas is going up 50 cents a gallon or so."

Anthony Purvis adds, "If gas prices go up, [it] causes us to work more to pay for gas. They are already high enough."

As some stations exceed the $3.00 a gallon mark, Gov. Jeb Bush is encouraging drivers to conserve fuel and utilities are urging customers to conserve electricity through this weekend.
