As Hurricane Rita is rumbling toward land, many law enforcement officers are returning from the Katrina aftermath.
LT John Bagnardi with the Florida Highway Patrol spent two weeks in Mississippi. He says he and his officers were in disbelief as they snapped photos of the devastation.
Although tragedy is common in their job, Bagnardi admits this was a tough assignment.
Bagnardi says, "Many of these total strangers will spill their guts to you and it's heartbreaking. It makes you appreciate life and what you have at home."
The lieutenant says the phrase "life is too short" has taken on a whole new meaning. The Florida Highway Patrol contributed 46 percent of its agency to the cause.
