TALLAHASSEE - A group of local archaeologists are out digging up some interesting finds at Wakulla Springs.

The team was out digging big holes and sifting through dirt at Wakulla Springs State Park, looking for ancient artifacts.

The dig is a continuation of a project that was started more than ten years ago by state archaeologist Calvin Jones, after he found a PaleoIndian knife blade. Archaeologists believe it could be more than 10,000 years old.

Archaeologists hope their latest finds help them uncover more about the people who lived near the springs thousands of years ago.

"We're really trying to apply some new scientific techniques that haven't been used before out here and just broaden our knowledge of Florida's history and pre-history," said Jim Dunbar, an archaeologist with the Bureau of Archaeological Research.

The team has been out digging and sifting all week. So far it has found several stone chips it believes are from old Native American tools. The team will be out digging at the park for the next month.
