Deerlake Middle School in Tallahassee has been designated a blue ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education.
The blue ribbon school program honors public and private k-12 schools that are either academically superior in their states or that show great gains in student achievement.
Principal Jackie Pons says, "We're awful proud of our students, parents and teachers and all of the business partners we have in this community that has supported Deerlake."
Deerlake is the only public secondary school in Florida to received the designation and only one of 12 middle schools in the nation to receive the honor this year.
