A persistent and spreading red tide has just forced the closure of the last shellfish harvesting area in the Big Bend.
Florida's Division of Aquaculture will close the Wakulla shellfish harvesting area effective at sundown Tuesday.
Spokesman David Heil says there will be no recreational or commercial harvesting of oysters off Wakulla County until further notice.
Shellfish harvesting areas in Apalachicola Bay also remain closed.
Red tide rolled into area waters several weeks ago and has killed thousands of fish.
