The state of Florida is projecting a growth of five million people over the next 17 years.
To help ease "growing" pains, Leon County is one of eight regions that has been selected as a pilot city.
What does all this mean?
Leon County is being monitored as it continues to grow. The Department of Community Affairs is looking to learn about policy, planning, and budgeting in Leon County and pass what they learn on to other areas of Florida.
Thaddeus Cohen, Secretary of the Department of Community Affairs, says, "So for us it's opportunity to build on some of the work that they are already doing, use them with the other seven communities to be a model for the entire state."
Secretary Cohen adds by the end of 2006 they hope to have a "best practices" document to share with other communities.
