Fourth Ave. Rec Center Closed

The City of Tallahassee has had to shut down one of its rec centers after a crack in the wall grew so big you could see through it.

The Fourth Avenue Community Center will be shut down for months as crews make repairs. The question now is where will all the kids go?

More than 100 children a day come to the Fourth Avenue Community Center. For now they'll have to meet outside. A rapidly growing crack in the wall was enough to convince city inspectors to lock the center's doors.

Peter Zulinke with the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department says, "We thought just for public safety to close the building. Chances are nothing would have ever happened, but we always want to err on the side of safety for our participants."

Engineers met at the center Thursday morning to assess the damage. The project director says the good news is nothing appears to be wrong with the foundation. The bad news is this façade, built just six years ago, is coming down.

Parks and Rec officials say the wall is literally collapsing under the weight of the building and it could take three months or more to size up the problem and fix it.

As children practice their steps for the upcoming FAMU homecoming parade, the center's supervisor is trying to firm up where the children will go after school from now on.

Cassandra Leland, Fourth Avenue Center Supervisor, says, "I want to, you know, keep everything going because I worked so hard to get participation where it is now. I just don't want to lose anyone because our facility needs repairs."

Both the Lincoln Neighborhood Center and the Dade Street Center are within walking distance. Plans to send children there should be firmed up sometime next week.
