The Gainesville chapter of the American Red Cross has opened a service center in Live Oak to assist evacuees displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Suwannee County officials say they had been requesting the center for weeks. Eileen Meehan, the executive director of the North Central Florida chapter made this statement:
"It took a few days to set up. Our goal is to serve the people and help them with this tragedy."
Centrally located in town, the Red Cross service center is located at the Live Oak Fire Station. Evacuees say it has been of great service, but express an overwhelming outreach from community residents.
The Red Cross Service Center will provide food, clothes, and money orders.
