Despite protests from the family of a toddler shot and killed in April, prosecutor have agreed to a deal for the shooter to face a maximum of 15 years in prison.

Todderick Rashad Sams pleaded guilty yesterday to manslaughter with a firearm for the killing of 15-month-old Jahsean Cameron and faces from eight to 15 years in prison.

Authorities initially believed Sams intentionally shot the child. Sams was indicted in October for first-degree murder.

State Attorney Harry Shorstein says he agreed to the plea because several witnesses recanted key statements to police after Sams' indictment. Physical evidence also suggested Sams had NOT targeted Jahsean.

Veneta Stephenson, Jahsean's grandmother, says her family wants Sams to be tried for murder and says prosecutors went against their wishes.

Sams is slated to be sentenced Feb. 27.
