Progress Energy, which already operates one nuclear power plant in Crystal River, is looking for a site in Central Florida. Governor Jeb Bush says the state should be doing all it can to help with the permits.
“I do believe that we need to take a look at our permitting process for nuclear power. I think it is the safest, cheapest form of energy and provides the most stability that exists with current technologies.”
Nuclear power has been out of favor since the partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island plant back in 1979. In fact, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission hasn’t issued permits for any new plants in more than 20 years.
If they do get the green light to build in Florida, officials at Progress Energy say it will take at least ten years before the plant is up and running.
