Jefferson County Schools Stay Open for Veterans Day

School officials there have held fast to the tradition of keeping their schools open during Veterans Day.

While the day is observed in parks and city streets, school officials say they host events at each campus to honor the men and women who fought for our country's freedom.

Phil Barker, Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, says, "As educators we've always felt like it’s our responsibility that students understand the importance of Veterans Day and what they've done for our country, so each school site has a short performance."

Jefferson County has also made it a tradition to provide lunch for all veterans who participate in the school programs.
