Most college students are about to head home to spend the holidays with their families. In Tallahassee though, some are staying behind to make sure needy families get a Thanksgiving meal.
A mother who makes a living feeding others has others feeding her this holiday season thanks to some real giving college students.
"On behalf of FAMU's biology department, we present this for a family to have a blessed Thanksgiving."
Faculty and students at FAMU are reaching out to needy families, providing a basket full of turkey, stuffing and all the fixings.
"They just don't know the blessing they bring in my family and in my heart this day," said Valerie Burney, who's receiving a basket.
She's a single, working mother raising three teenage girls. She says last year she was alone on Thanksgiving because she admitted herself to a rehab clinic.
"We always used to get together and just cook, everybody have their portion of what they want to cook what they want to bake, and I missed that last year, so this year thank God I got it back," she said smiling.
Burney is a proud parent at Fairview Middle School where one of her daughters is a student. The faculty members say they knew this would be the perfect family for a Thanksgiving basket.
"I thought I’d be able to help everyone on my list and then she was next in line, so it was a blessing for her and we were glad to be able to make her holiday even brighter," said Fairview Middle School guidance counselor Leslie Pla Perrottee
It’s brighter just knowing she'll spend Thanksgiving around the dinner table with her girls. The biology students at FAMU delivered 10 baskets Tuesday to families at 10 different schools.
