Mistreatment of Rape Victims

Despite some improvements, an FSU professor finds the system still mistreats rape victims.

In Dr. Patricia Martin's new book, "Rape Work," she describes how the police, doctors, lawyers and judges help, but in a harmful way.

The sociology professor argues that even well-meaning officials do harm by simply doing their job.

Dr. Martin says, "It's an irony because they may in their hearts feel sympathetic, want to be comforting, want to do all of the right things, but their job says find out if she's a good witness, is she consistent is it the same story every time?"

Martin also says some health professionals resent having to do rape exams and therefore treat victims rudely.

She says agencies need to partner with rape crisis centers to receive training on how to treat those who have been victimized.
