The Department of Business Regulation is checking out more than 2000 elevators around the state with a history of having out-of-date safety certificates.
Inspectors leave a big orange warning sticker on or near the elevator to let the business owner know they have to renew their certificates by having a safety inspection within 30 days.
The secretary of the department says the businesses get repeated warnings.
In 2003, the state went to a new system requiring businesses to pay for an inspection once a year instead of having state inspectors check the elevators once every two years.
