The news of Officer Johns' death hit both law enforcement agencies and the community hard. Officer Johns, his wife Kimberly, and his nine-year-old son Brett were struck and killed by a truck December 24. Officers say it's hard losing one of their own, and say the timing couldn't have been worse.
The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened on County Road 360 in Madison County just after midnight. FHP says alcohol was a factor when 19-year-old Paul Williams drove his truck head on into the Johns’ car. Williams also died in the collision, and his passenger was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
Johns was with the Perry Police Department for 17 years, serving the department in many capacities. Viewing for Officer Johns and his family is Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and services are Wednesday morning at 11 at the First Baptist Church in Perry. The burial will be at Pineview Memorial Gardens.
