The next time you look at a nutrition label you may notice some changes.

Starting January 1 the Food and Drug Administration is requiring food manufacturers to list trans fats on nutrition labels.

Trans fats, which are found in some margarines, potato chips and fried foods, can raise our bad cholesterol. In turn it can also increase our risk for heart disease.

These types of fats are made when manufacturers add hydrogen to vegetable oil, a process that increases the shelf life and flavor of foods.

The FDA encourages consumers to choose foods low in trans fats.
