Running Red Lights

Last year police wrote thousands of tickets for the offense, and they're ready to write even more.

Red light running is one of the top concerns police say they're hearing from the neighborhood associations in town, so this month they'll be out in full force.

Cross that stop line when the light turns red and officers say you can expect a ticket.
When it comes to running red lights, some drivers just don't understand why other drivers do it.

Tallahassee police say more than a quarter of the accidents they respond to are caused by red light runners.

Rudy Rowe, a Tallahassee driver, says, “I think we're probably the red light running capital of the south."

It's just one driver’s opinion, but you stop and wonder.

We were only at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Sixth Avenue for half an hour and three people were caught running a red light.

SGT Steve Gauding with the Tallahassee Police Department Traffic Unit says, "So far in 2005, for the first 11 months, we issued over 2,700 citations for running a red light opposed to the approximately 1,500 for all of 2004."

SGT Gauding says TPD will be concentrating on some of the most dangerous intersections in town. Apalachee Parkway and Blair Stone are topping the list, followed by Apalachee and Magnolia, and three intersections of Capital Circle round out the top five, but those intersections are not the only place they'll be.

If there's a red light an officer might be waiting. The cost for running a red light doubled in Florida in October. In Tallahassee the penalty went up to $185.50, plus it's four points on your license.

It's all this month and at all hours of the day. However, the most dangerous times are during the morning and evening rush hours, so you can expect to see even more officers patrolling during those times.
