Cold nights are hard for all of us to endure, but they're especially harsh for those without warm winter clothing.

That's why the Tallahassee Police Department is making sure at least the children are bundled up this winter.

Tuesday afternoon officers handed out about 350 coats that'll be distributed to needy children.

Businesses and community members donated the jackets as part of the annual Coats for Kids project.

“This means a warm commute back and forth to school, to play out in the yard in, hopefully to keep them from getting sick so the attendance in school is higher, so it means a lot to them," said Joe Millender with the Tallahassee Police Department.

The coats were given to principals at five different schools in town. All of the schools are part of the Weed and Seed program, which works to combat crime in local neighborhoods.

The principals say they'll hand out the coats to children who need them most.
