Grand Jury to Review Fatal Police Shooting

A Leon County grand jury will meet Wednesday to decide if Tallahassee police officers were justified in shooting and killing a 17-year-old.

The Thomasville teenager's family contends it was unnecessary use of deadly force, but the grand jury will have the final say.

John Hayes was shot and killed by police in November. The officers were responding to a "shots fired" call and had pulled over the Chevy Caprice in which Hayes was riding.

They claim Hayes refused commands to step away from the car and instead lunged toward it with a gun in reach.

Police have confirmed Hayes was shot in the back, and all four officers fired shots at him.

Wednesday a grand jury will hear testimony in that case to decide whether any criminal charges are warranted against the officers or if they were justified in opening fire.
