The price of construction materials such as metal and copper continues to rise, leading to their disappearance from construction sites. Authorities say more construction in Leon County is leading to more construction related thefts.
Most items are left out and people can see them from the streets making them easy targets.
Leon county sheriff's investigators say stealing from construction sites can get you in serious trouble.
SGT Steve Harrelson of the Leon County Sheriff's Office says, "Going into a construction site and stealing is a felony in the state of Florida, and then the actual theft of the material, so you're dealing with felony charges and it’s punishable anywhere from five to 10 years."
Authorities say sometimes the culprits are employees that work at the sites, but most time the crime is committed by someone who just drives by.
