This February, a month-long relay celebration will make its way across the Sunshine State.
During the Florida Department of Health's third annual "Step Up Florida," walkers will pass a fitness flag from county to county. The goal is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles, but this year another focus is on the epidemic of childhood obesity.
Leon County schools health and nursing coordinator Lorri Pilkington says, "And with that comes chronic health conditions that didn't occur in childhood are now occurring. We've got more students now with type II diabetes when four years ago we didn't have a single student with type II diabetes in the school system."
The Step Up Florida event in Leon County will be held February 16, with registration for walkers beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Kleman Plaza. For more information, call (850) 487-3162 and ask for a Step Up coordinator.
