Families who own their own home can apply for mini grants from the Red Cross. That means up to $1,500 for storm shutters, tree cut downs, sewer valves, and to raise outdoor appliances.
Red Cross officials say each year they set aside more than $100,000 to pay for these upgrades.
Chris Floyd with the Capital Area Red Cross says, "Let's do what we can to make their homes safer. Usually, they're the ones most heavily impacted after a disaster."
The grants are part of a Disaster Resistant Neighborhood Program which will include a hurricane drill in April. Call the Red Cross at 850-878-6080 to see if you qualify.
