Inmate DNA Testing Bill Approved by Florida Legislature

The bill’s approval comes just one week after Allan Crozier was released from state prison after DNA proved he did not commit the crime that sent him there.

Inmate advocates say there are many more behind bars who don’t belong there.

Jenny Greenberg of the Innocence Project says, “Estimates of wrongful incarceration range from a conservative .5 percent to what I believe is more accurate, 10 percent, so we know we have a massive, massive problem."

Some lawmakers expressed concern that inmates who pleaded guilty could use DNA to challenge their convictions, but advocates say many plea bargains were coerced and a guilty plea should not be held against someone who is innocent.
